28 Days Purging Series: Day 24

Welcome to day twenty four of this purging series. Today we are going to be doing Car.

Our goal is to spend 20 minutes or less on this task. Throughout this series there may be tasks that only take 5-10 mins and that is great and gives so much motivation to keep on with the tasks in the days ahead.

Also, during these daily tasks for our purging series if there is a day where it does not apply to you or that place does not need it you can select another area to do with the same idea of 20 minutes or less.

Yes today we will be doing our Car, our cars get too get cluttered over time and when the task comes up it can be a bit overwhelming. As a family of six and two fur babies I know first hand how much can end up in our car. Use bags to sort your items as they are being removed, to wash, needs to go back in the house (to put away), and a trash bag. This task shouldn’t be too long, we will only be decluttering not cleaning. Let’s begin, first let do the pockets on the driver’s side door, then move into your glove box and/or middle, then the passenger side and the door. Then move into the backseat and then the trunk. Remove all things that don’t need to be there.

Try to make this a habit, depending how much you see yourself ending up with you can deicide if you want to up keep with this weekly, bi-weekly, monthly. This will help with this task taking less time.

Comment below and let me know if you took part in today’s task.

28 Days Purging Series: Day 23

Welcome to day twenty three of this purging series. Today we are going to be doing our Night table.

This task should not take to long. Let’s start with the top of our night tables, go thru what you have on top and deicide if that’s where what’s there belongs. I personally don’t keep much other then decor, phone charger, and a bottle of water on top of my nightstand. Then move into the cupboard or drawer where you keep items (almost like a junk drawer, hand lotions, chap sticks, creams, etc….) Remove everything that doesn’t belong. Everything you have stored in this area should be things/items you use and also tend to need by your bedside.

Mine was pretty good. Just needed to give it a tidy and it took me 2 minutes to go through it. One side of this drawer hold my extra sun glasses and their case holders. So nothing changed there. Just like Handbags, I don’t over buy sunglasses anymore. I do something jump on the trend on these but not so much anymore. The ones I have are staples that aren’t a trend.

28 Days Purging Series: Day 22

Welcome to day twenty two of this purging series. Today we are going to be doing Handbags.

Just like Day 20, this task might be a little harder on the decision making side. I love handbags, over the years I collected lots of handbags, about 5 years ago I did a big declutter of all my handbags, I narrowed it down to my most loved and used. I have a different look when purchasing handbags now, I really live by quality over quantity. I also, no longer jump on every trend. A trend is something that isn’t here for long.

For this task, we are going to go through all our handbags in sight. If you have seasonal bags packed away you don’t have to go through them until you are ready to pull them out for the season. First similar to Day 20, pull the ones you know you love and use. Next, pull one bag out at a time and make a decision. Make piles, to donate, to sell.
If you have luxury bags that you don’t want to get rid of because of the amount of money spent on them, consider selling them. There are many sites you can pick from to sell your items. Research them and pick the one of your choice (examples: Facebook Market Place, On your own Instagram account, Poshmark Canada). You won’t get what you spent, but you will earn something from it and that handbag will go to someone who will make good use of it. If you come across bags that you would like to donate I have come across a great cause on Instagram called Purse Project York, check them out here or select of course from your own choices.

Was this a hard one? For me now it is not, as I explained earlier on I have really paired down my collection and think about many things before purchasing a new bag.

28 Days Purging Series: Day 21

Welcome to day twenty one of this purging series. Today we are going to be doing Clothes.

Going through our clothing can be very overwhelming, this is why this task is not a pull every piece of clothing out. This is more going through your items, if you pack your seasonal clothes then just like in Day 20, leave those for you to do until you pull them out. (Tip: if you go through your items seasonally it will be much easier for you to up keep with the amount of clothing you hold onto).
Let’s set that timer and go. Let’s start with the closet, quickly go through the pieces, remove anything you have not worn in the past year and put aside. Once done, go through those pieces you pulled out and be truly honest with yourself, would you still wear it, does it fit, etc.. If you answered that you would still wear it when returning the piece put it in the front and see if you reach for it. (or you can hang it with the hanger in opposite to the others, then you will be able to see if you have reach for it or not in your next purge) In a few months, check back with those items in the front and if you didn’t wear it you know you won’t be. Next move into your drawers and do the same. Use the same tips for decision making. Always think of if you have even worn the item once, that will also help with the process of letting go.

For all your items that you are letting go of, if in good condition please look into donating these items to a great place.

28 Days Purging Series: Day 19

Welcome to day nineteen of this purging series. Today we are going to be doing our Purse & Wallet.

Our purse and wallets carry a lot of regular things already. With each passing day more and more gets added in them. Today’s task should not take too long. First, empty everything from your purse. Make piles to sort “to go back in”, “to put away”, and “trash”. Once done move onto your wallet, keeping the same type of sorting. With our wallets not everything needs to be pulled out, I would do a visual and quick check of slots. Remove what you see no longer needs to be there. I have come into the habit of doing this once a week. Since sticking with it I am never losing things in my bag. I am also not overwhelmed with the amount of receipts and other things to be put away.

How often do you clean out your purse?

28 Days Purging Series: Day 17

Welcome to day seventeen of this purging series. Today we are going to be doing our at home Office Desk/Space.

Our desk space is very important it can also collect a lot on top of it. Having a clutter free and organized work space can help so much with our head space and our productivity. Having a lot out can clutter our head space making us less productive and easily distracted. It will also make it easy to find what we need. I have an home office room, currently sharing this room with hubby and my 9 year old. Hubby has his office desk, my 9 year old has an area setup for online learning, and then there is my space. I have found that since online learning started, more ends on top of my desk space. Either it’s me who was working in a different room and I just put my things on top on the desk when done, or my kids papers and other school things. I am lucky that I do have my filing cabinet organized and my desk drawers, so when things get out of hand on my desk I can easily clean up and put all things where they go.

It’s not too bad, but of course it still needed some love. I try to always have my desk ready for the next day each night. If I could not get it done that night, the next day before starting to work in that space I take 5-10 mins to go through and deal with it. This task doesn’t need to be an actual room that is just your home office, this can apply to the space/area you use to work at. Mine took no more then 15 mins, I even went thru some papers that needed to be reviewed.

28 Days Purging Series: Day 16

Welcome to day sixteen of this purging series. Today we are going to be doing our Computers/Laptops.

Our computers/laptops can hold a lot. Today similar to Day 15, we are going to go through our computers and get rid of apps, files, notes, photos, programs, etc… that we are no longer using or/& needing. If needed we can also organize the files, apps, notes, photos, etc… into folders which will help us in the long run to know where we can find everything. Doing this will also help with our systems memory and making it work better. Doing this can also be very time consuming so remember to set your timer. Just like my phone (Day15), my laptop can use this purge very much. If you have both (a computer, a laptop) pick the one you use most or the one you think needs this the most. For me I pick my laptop, I tend to use mine more just because it is more convenient to move around with. My computer holds more of items that I need to backup or store. I will do my computer at another time when I have some free time. Also, if you have both getting one done and having that awesome feeling will motivate you to do it to the next device at another time. At the end you can change up your back ground of your home screen, it will make it feel as refreshed as the declutter and organization task you just did.

Did you find that your computer/laptop needed a good purge?

28 Days Purging Series: Day 18

Welcome to day eighteen of this purging series. Today we are going to be doing Emails.

Emails are something that can get out of hand quickly, especially if you are subscribed to many mailing lists. We will be going through our emails and sorting. In your inbox if you don’t have it already I would create folders where you can organize your emails. For today, create folders ” needs attention” and another called to “review” (if you don’t have those already). You can also create folders that you see fit for your organizing of this. This will help go through your emails more quickly. Sort according as you go thru your inbox. Now is the perfect time to unsubscribe from any mailing lists that you are no longer interested in. After sorting, any emails left in your inbox should be the ones you want to delete. This will be the final step and much easier. This way you can select all and delete once you are done. Give it one last look before hitting the delete button just to be sure that all that is left is everything you don’t want/need.

If you have many email accounts, I would pick one for today. This will help with you not feeling overwhelmed. You can do this task again for your other emails when you have the time.

This is a great task, and if you keep up with it (at least once a week) you will never run into an over cluttered email inbox.

Comment below and let me know if you took part in today’s task. How long did it take you?

28 Days Purging Series: Day 20

Welcome to day twenty of this purging series. Today we are going to be doing Shoes.

Shoes can be a hard one for many of us shoe lovers. No need to pull all of them out, if your seasonal ones are packed away for the season just go thru the ones that are out (you can do those ones when they come out for the season). Let’s set that timer and go. If you have a crazy amount of shoes and 20 minutes is not enough, you can choose to do this task longer or if it’s too overwhelming you can come back to this task another time (any amount of progress is good). Your most less used ones will have a nice pile of dust on them (or their boxes), start with those first. It may be easier to purge the ones that you don’t use often. Next, all your most worn can be pulled out and put aside. For all others go thru them and deicide how much you really wear or/and need them. I use to buy shoes all the time, now I am more cautious of what I buy and how many of the same or/and similar am I purchasing. I love shoes, shoes and handbags are my favourite items to purchase. After a good declutter and really seeing how many similar shoes I have or even just how many of the same colour was shocking and made me see how I am wasting my money. There are only so many shoes we really need, especially when it comes to fancy shoes and high heels. I now buy as needed, if the ones I own need replacing or if I really like the shoe and need it in a different colour I may buy the same shoe style but not in multiples, simply because I know they are comfortable and will be worn. For all your items that you are letting go of, if in good condition please look into donating these items to a great place.

Was this task harder on making the decision of keeping or letting go?

28 Days Purging Series: Day 14

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Welcome to day fourteen of this purging series. Today we are going to be doing Jewelry.

Over time we can accumulate a lot of costume jewelry. Trends come and go quickly. For this task, we are going to go through all costume jewelry, we are looking for pieces we longer wear. Pieces that were on trend that aren’t anymore and you no longer want should go first, it will make the decision process easier. Then go through your other pieces, be honest with yourself if you will ever wear it again. All items found can be donated or you can put it up for sale. Also, some types of jewelry tarnish over time and so if they can’t be bought back to life then they should make to trash pile. Jewelry could be harder to deicide on what to keep and not, (not talking about real gold or silver pieces) those what if’s can pop up often making it hard to make a decision. If they aren’t real gold or silver they will tarnish anyways and by the time you need or if you go back to them they might not be in good condition. Just remember if you aren’t using them or haven’t in the last year mostly likely you won’t miss them.

I use to have a hard time letting go of costume jewelry, I learned from my last big purge on jewelry that the items I kept I never looked for or bothered to wear. I had a crazy amount, it was easier when doing these easy timed purges that I continued to realized I really didn’t need or want them. So if you held onto more then you wanted, don’t worry when you redo this task another time you will realize it and you will purge more.

Comment below and let me know if you took part in today’s task. Did you find it hard to deicide? Are you finding these timed purges more successful?
