28 Days Purging Series: Day 27

Welcome to day twenty seven of this purging series. Today we are going to be doing the Junk Drawer.

Our goal is to spend 20 minutes or less on this task. Throughout this series there may be tasks that only take 5-10 mins and that is great and gives so much motivation to keep on with the tasks in the days ahead.

Also, during these daily tasks for our purging series if there is a day where it does not apply to you or that place does not need it you can select another area to do with the same idea of 20 minutes or less.

I think every home as a junk drawer and who ever started that idea, I love it. Our junk drawer is where all different items/gadgets/tools live. It is also where my family drops things they don’t know where to put or where they belong. With that being said junk drawers can become very messy and cluttered. So let’s set those timers and go. You will want to make piles for sorting, to go back in, to relocate, to review (papers/mail) and trash. Once you are done, anything that needs to be relocated, take these items to where they belong. This task took me about 10 mins, a quick wipe was done too before putting everything away.

How long did this task take you? Does your junk drawer serve a purpose or is it just a dumping ground?

28 Days Purging Series: Day 26

Welcome to day twenty six of this purging series. Today we are going to be doing Books/Magazines.

This task should not take long. Choose only the books that belong to you not your kids or other family members, unless you don’t have any and want to choose to do theirs for this task.
Get two bins ready, one for donate (either to donate to a place or to hand over to someone you know will enjoy it ), one for recycling (magazines). Start from the top pile and work your way through. Keep the ones you want to re-read (only if you truly are going to) or you use for reference. Books that you haven’t had a chance and might seem not interesting to you anymore let those go. Everything you have read that you haven’t selected to re-read is less likely you will ever pick up again. Keeping them will only make your piles grow larger over time making future purging harder (longer) to go through.

Was this an easy one for you? This took me less then 5 minutes, I honestly don’t hold onto books and magazines, the magazines I have kept are ones that I use as table or spot decor. All books I have kept are only the ones to read and the ones I use for references. With this being said I didn’t include my kids books, I only went through their dictionary, thesaurus, reference books (researching), etc… which are kept with my books.

A question I would love to know is would you re-do this purging series again at a later date to up keep with your home?

28 Days Purging Series: Day 25

Welcome to day twenty five of this purging series. Today we are going to be doing Crafts.

This task can apply to your kids crafts if you don’t personally have any yourself. This task can seem like it is going to take forever if you have a good amount of craft supplies, but it won’t. Set those timers for 20 minutes, and that’s all the time you will need at the most (for today anyway). Get a trash bag ready and a bin for anything you want to donate. Do not pull everything out (if you have a large amount you will feel overwhelmed and if that timer goes off and you don’t have more time to spare you may be left with a mess). Start in sections and work your way through, this is a great time to get rid of old brushes, old paints, and anything you come across that you don’t use (or your kids).

Once that timer goes off, your done. Even if you did not get to do it all, that’s ok. You can re-visit it another day (unless you have the time and would like to continue). This purging series are for us to feel motivated and happy with any progress we get done. It is to show us that we can accomplish a lot in just a few minutes a day. Also, long hard tasks will make us feeling overwhelmed with less chances we will want to do it again.

Let me know how you are enjoying this series, what has been your favourite task?

28 Days Purging Series: Day 24

Welcome to day twenty four of this purging series. Today we are going to be doing Car.

Yes today we will be doing our Car, our cars get too get cluttered over time and when the task comes up it can be a bit overwhelming. As a family of six and two fur babies I know first hand how much can end up in our car. Use bags to sort your items as they are being removed, to wash, needs to go back in the house (to put away), and a trash bag. This task shouldn’t be too long, we will only be decluttering not cleaning. Let’s begin, first let do the pockets on the driver’s side door, then move into your glove box and/or middle, then the passenger side and the door. Then move into the backseat and then the trunk. Remove all things that don’t need to be there.

Try to make this a habit, depending how much you see yourself ending up with you can deicide if you want to up keep with this weekly, bi-weekly, monthly. This will help with this task taking less time.

Comment below and let me know if you took part in today’s task.

28 Days Purging Series: Day 23

Welcome to day twenty three of this purging series. Today we are going to be doing our Night table.

This task should not take to long. Let’s start with the top of our night tables, go thru what you have on top and deicide if that’s where what’s there belongs. I personally don’t keep much other then decor, phone charger, and a bottle of water on top of my nightstand. Then move into the cupboard or drawer where you keep items (almost like a junk drawer, hand lotions, chap sticks, creams, etc….) Remove everything that doesn’t belong. Everything you have stored in this area should be things/items you use and also tend to need by your bedside.

Mine was pretty good. Just needed to give it a tidy and it took me 2 minutes to go through it. One side of this drawer hold my extra sun glasses and their case holders. So nothing changed there. Just like Handbags, I don’t over buy sunglasses anymore. I do something jump on the trend on these but not so much anymore. The ones I have are staples that aren’t a trend.

Comment below and let me know if you took part in today’s task.

28 Days Purging Series: Day 21

Welcome to day twenty one of this purging series. Today we are going to be doing Clothes.

Going through our clothing can be very overwhelming, this is why this task is not a pull every piece of clothing out. This is more going through your items, if you pack your seasonal clothes then just like in Day 20, leave those for you to do until you pull them out. (Tip: if you go through your items seasonally it will be much easier for you to up keep with the amount of clothing you hold onto).
Let’s set that timer and go. Let’s start with the closet, quickly go through the pieces, remove anything you have not worn in the past year and put aside. Once done, go through those pieces you pulled out and be truly honest with yourself, would you still wear it, does it fit, etc.. If you answered that you would still wear it when returning the piece put it in the front and see if you reach for it. (or you can hang it with the hanger in opposite to the others, then you will be able to see if you have reach for it or not in your next purge) In a few months, check back with those items in the front and if you didn’t wear it you know you won’t be. Next move into your drawers and do the same. Use the same tips for decision making. Always think of if you have even worn the item once, that will also help with the process of letting go.

For all your items that you are letting go of, if in good condition please look into donating these items to a great place.

28 Days Purging Series: Day 19

Welcome to day nineteen of this purging series. Today we are going to be doing our Purse & Wallet.

Our purse and wallets carry a lot of regular things already. With each passing day more and more gets added in them. Today’s task should not take too long. First, empty everything from your purse. Make piles to sort “to go back in”, “to put away”, and “trash”. Once done move onto your wallet, keeping the same type of sorting. With our wallets not everything needs to be pulled out, I would do a visual and quick check of slots. Remove what you see no longer needs to be there. I have come into the habit of doing this once a week. Since sticking with it I am never losing things in my bag. I am also not overwhelmed with the amount of receipts and other things to be put away.

How often do you clean out your purse?

28 Days Purging Series: Day 28

Welcome to day twenty eight of this purging series, it’s our last day to this purging series. Today we are going to be doing blankets.

It’s the last day of the purging series, I have picked an easy task for today. Not sure about you guys, but our blanket collection can grow massively. Could be due to changing bedding decor or kids out grew a theme, but we hold onto the blanket for other reasons that we think we may need. With keeping of the blankets we only add to the pile and never let the others we had go. So blankets is another category I believe is a good one to be apart of our purging series. They are only so many blankets that are stored that we need to hold onto. For me, I have two for guests, everything else was just so many other blankets and/or throws that we added to the closet, but never let go of and truly never really use. Out of ten, I kept six, two that is great quality and are for guests, the other four I kept for the girls for fort building or if we need a backup for some reason. Also, one of them is for outdoor use (like in the backyard, for the park, etc…)

28 Days Purging Series: Day 17

Welcome to day seventeen of this purging series. Today we are going to be doing our at home Office Desk/Space.

Our desk space is very important it can also collect a lot on top of it. Having a clutter free and organized work space can help so much with our head space and our productivity. Having a lot out can clutter our head space making us less productive and easily distracted. It will also make it easy to find what we need. I have an home office room, currently sharing this room with hubby and my 9 year old. Hubby has his office desk, my 9 year old has an area setup for online learning, and then there is my space. I have found that since online learning started, more ends on top of my desk space. Either it’s me who was working in a different room and I just put my things on top on the desk when done, or my kids papers and other school things. I am lucky that I do have my filing cabinet organized and my desk drawers, so when things get out of hand on my desk I can easily clean up and put all things where they go.

It’s not too bad, but of course it still needed some love. I try to always have my desk ready for the next day each night. If I could not get it done that night, the next day before starting to work in that space I take 5-10 mins to go through and deal with it. This task doesn’t need to be an actual room that is just your home office, this can apply to the space/area you use to work at. Mine took no more then 15 mins, I even went thru some papers that needed to be reviewed.

28 Days Purging Series: Day 16

Welcome to day sixteen of this purging series. Today we are going to be doing our Computers/Laptops.

Our computers/laptops can hold a lot. Today similar to Day 15, we are going to go through our computers and get rid of apps, files, notes, photos, programs, etc… that we are no longer using or/& needing. If needed we can also organize the files, apps, notes, photos, etc… into folders which will help us in the long run to know where we can find everything. Doing this will also help with our systems memory and making it work better. Doing this can also be very time consuming so remember to set your timer. Just like my phone (Day15), my laptop can use this purge very much. If you have both (a computer, a laptop) pick the one you use most or the one you think needs this the most. For me I pick my laptop, I tend to use mine more just because it is more convenient to move around with. My computer holds more of items that I need to backup or store. I will do my computer at another time when I have some free time. Also, if you have both getting one done and having that awesome feeling will motivate you to do it to the next device at another time. At the end you can change up your back ground of your home screen, it will make it feel as refreshed as the declutter and organization task you just did.

Did you find that your computer/laptop needed a good purge?
