28 Days Purging Series: Day 16

Welcome to day sixteen of this purging series. Today we are going to be doing our Computers/Laptops.

Our goal is to spend 20 minutes or less on this task. Throughout this series there may be tasks that only take 5-10 mins and that is great and gives so much motivation to keep on with the tasks in the days ahead.

Also, during these daily tasks for our purging series if there is a day where it does not apply to you or that place does not need it you can select another area to do with the same idea of 20 minutes or less.

Our computers/laptops can hold a lot. Today similar to Day 15, we are going to go through our computers and get rid of apps, files, notes, photos, programs, etc… that we are no longer using or/& needing. If needed we can also organize the files, apps, notes, photos, etc… into folders which will help us in the long run to know where we can find everything. Doing this will also help with our systems memory and making it work better. Doing this can also be very time consuming so remember to set your timer. Just like my phone (Day15), my laptop can use this purge very much. If you have both (a computer, a laptop) pick the one you use most or the one you think needs this the most. For me I pick my laptop, I tend to use mine more just because it is more convenient to move around with. My computer holds more of items that I need to backup or store. I will do my computer at another time when I have some free time. Also, if you have both getting one done and having that awesome feeling will motivate you to do it to the next device at another time. At the end you can change up your back ground of your home screen, it will make it feel as refreshed as the declutter and organization task you just did.

Did you find that your computer/laptop needed a good purge?

28 Days Purging Series: Day 18

Welcome to day eighteen of this purging series. Today we are going to be doing Emails.

Emails are something that can get out of hand quickly, especially if you are subscribed to many mailing lists. We will be going through our emails and sorting. In your inbox if you don’t have it already I would create folders where you can organize your emails. For today, create folders ” needs attention” and another called to “review” (if you don’t have those already). You can also create folders that you see fit for your organizing of this. This will help go through your emails more quickly. Sort according as you go thru your inbox. Now is the perfect time to unsubscribe from any mailing lists that you are no longer interested in. After sorting, any emails left in your inbox should be the ones you want to delete. This will be the final step and much easier. This way you can select all and delete once you are done. Give it one last look before hitting the delete button just to be sure that all that is left is everything you don’t want/need.

If you have many email accounts, I would pick one for today. This will help with you not feeling overwhelmed. You can do this task again for your other emails when you have the time.

This is a great task, and if you keep up with it (at least once a week) you will never run into an over cluttered email inbox.

Comment below and let me know if you took part in today’s task. How long did it take you?

28 Days Purging Series: Day 20

Welcome to day twenty of this purging series. Today we are going to be doing Shoes.

Shoes can be a hard one for many of us shoe lovers. No need to pull all of them out, if your seasonal ones are packed away for the season just go thru the ones that are out (you can do those ones when they come out for the season). Let’s set that timer and go. If you have a crazy amount of shoes and 20 minutes is not enough, you can choose to do this task longer or if it’s too overwhelming you can come back to this task another time (any amount of progress is good). Your most less used ones will have a nice pile of dust on them (or their boxes), start with those first. It may be easier to purge the ones that you don’t use often. Next, all your most worn can be pulled out and put aside. For all others go thru them and deicide how much you really wear or/and need them. I use to buy shoes all the time, now I am more cautious of what I buy and how many of the same or/and similar am I purchasing. I love shoes, shoes and handbags are my favourite items to purchase. After a good declutter and really seeing how many similar shoes I have or even just how many of the same colour was shocking and made me see how I am wasting my money. There are only so many shoes we really need, especially when it comes to fancy shoes and high heels. I now buy as needed, if the ones I own need replacing or if I really like the shoe and need it in a different colour I may buy the same shoe style but not in multiples, simply because I know they are comfortable and will be worn. For all your items that you are letting go of, if in good condition please look into donating these items to a great place.

Was this task harder on making the decision of keeping or letting go?

28 Days Purging Series: Day 14

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Welcome to day fourteen of this purging series. Today we are going to be doing Jewelry.

Over time we can accumulate a lot of costume jewelry. Trends come and go quickly. For this task, we are going to go through all costume jewelry, we are looking for pieces we longer wear. Pieces that were on trend that aren’t anymore and you no longer want should go first, it will make the decision process easier. Then go through your other pieces, be honest with yourself if you will ever wear it again. All items found can be donated or you can put it up for sale. Also, some types of jewelry tarnish over time and so if they can’t be bought back to life then they should make to trash pile. Jewelry could be harder to deicide on what to keep and not, (not talking about real gold or silver pieces) those what if’s can pop up often making it hard to make a decision. If they aren’t real gold or silver they will tarnish anyways and by the time you need or if you go back to them they might not be in good condition. Just remember if you aren’t using them or haven’t in the last year mostly likely you won’t miss them.

I use to have a hard time letting go of costume jewelry, I learned from my last big purge on jewelry that the items I kept I never looked for or bothered to wear. I had a crazy amount, it was easier when doing these easy timed purges that I continued to realized I really didn’t need or want them. So if you held onto more then you wanted, don’t worry when you redo this task another time you will realize it and you will purge more.

Comment below and let me know if you took part in today’s task. Did you find it hard to deicide? Are you finding these timed purges more successful?

28 Days Purging Series: Day 13

Welcome to day thirteen of this purging series. Today we are going to be doing Nail Polish.

This task should not take long. It will be easier then Day 11 and Day 12.
Go through your nail polish, look for the ones that look like they have gone bad. Next pick your favourites and put aside in your keep pile. All the others you want to go through and deicide if you really want to hold onto those colours. If you haven’t touch it in the last 6 months, it’s time to go. According to google, unopened and properly stored polish will last at least 18 months, possibly 24 months depending on storage conditions. For me, I use to have a whole bin of nail polishes, I did a good clean out of them a few years ago and kept a good amount. I have three daughters, so they do get use these too which is why I still keep a good amount. I store all my regular polishes on this lazy susan from Dollarama and I love it. I have made it a habit to go thru them every 4 months. Getting rid of any I am not using or have gone bad. Last year I purchased a gel polish starter kit that I love and use more of then regular polishes, I store those in a different place, but I don’t have to go thru those as I just got them last Spring and since the current life with Cover I have used it often since I haven’t been in a salon in a long time. I also have a review on it if you want to check it out, here. I tend to use regular polish on my toe nails, but my younger two daughters love painting nails so that’s why I still have a good amount. This task took me no longer then 7 minutes. If you only have Gel/Shellac nail polishes or both you can do this task to both of your collections. If you have time to spare you can also go through your nail care products/items.

My after isn’t too different, but I did get rid of 5 polishes and gave it a quick tidy of the other nail care products that are kept here.

Comment below and let me know if you took part in today’s task. Do you still use regular polish?

28 Days Purging Series: Day 12

Welcome to day twelve of this purging series. Today we are going to be doing Makeup.

Makeup is something that we should be more on top of as they too expiry and some quicker then others. I have a great tip that I also shared in Day 11. (Tip: if your products don’t have an actual expiry date but have dates like 12M, 24M, etc make it a habit to check these dates before opening and then with a permanent marker write the date you opened it. For pallets you can write on the label that comes on the back. This will insure you don’t forget the date you started using it and will know if it has passed the date.) I will also share a website with great information of the life span of makeup Healthline has a great post on it. Makeup is another hard one for me, making decisions on what to keep and not, because I love trying new products, I like having certain things for certain times. I have all my makeup organized into categories so it wasn’t hard to go thru when it came to starting.

I use these aryclic makeup organizers from Amazon top, the bottom and my pallets are in these. The other clear trays are from Dollarama.

Depending on how you have your makeup organized this process maybe a bit different for you. You can make the process work for you. I started at the top and went thru each section. Getting rid of old and expired. I also got rid of items that would be expiring not long from now that I only use for weddings or events as with our current situation (Covid) these things won’t be happening anytime soon.

Well, this took me about 20 minutes, think the longest part was deciding what to let go of and going thru lip products for colours. I also check my back stock of my favourite products to see what I had. How long did this task take you?

28 Days Purging Series: Day 11

Welcome to day eleven of this purging series. Today we are going to be doing Shower and Skin Care Products.

For me, shower products will be super easy, skincare in the another hand I have way more to go thru.
I would start with the one that won’t take long. Go thru it all, get rid of whatever you aren’t liking or using. For skincare, it’s the same process, accept I would check the expiry date as well. (Tip: if your products don’t have an actual expiry date but have dates like 12M, 24M, etc make it a habit to check these dates before opening and then with a permanent marker write the date you opened it. This will insure you don’t forget the date you started using it and will know if it has passed the date.) I also have skin care in the shower that stay there. Those are my shower skin care items.

With my skincare, it took me longer as I accumulated so much. Reason for this is since I hit 35 years old I really got into skincare products more then ever. Also, with my skin type I need to rotate products, every 6 months I change my products as I start noticing less of the benefits. Not saying they are not good products, but once my skin gets to using it after some time I need to change it up. (I do go back to them.) I also have acne prone skin so lots of products and masks I have collected. I also had products, that I bought that I didn’t think worked or didn’t like as much as whatever current products I was using, but held onto them. So, this is the reason this Skincare would take me much longer. I took 5 mins if not less with my shower products, and even with 5 mins. The remaining of the time was spent on my skincare products. I really went in through them, checking dates, and really being honest with myself about if I would use them (for certain ones).

Doesn’t it feel amazing to purge? I love that feeling, clean and clear spaces.

28 Days Purging Series: Day 10

Welcome to day ten of this purging series. Today we are going to be doing Laundry Products. This task will be very similar to Day 9 Cleaning Products.

Another day another purge. As like yesterday’s Day 9, this task should not take long and is pretty similar in the process. We are just going to go thru all of our products. If you don’t have anything to purge that’s fine, take the time to do a quick tidy and you may notice what you need to buy more of.
For me this task took 5 mins, I did have a few products to get rid of which were stain removers that I have tried a few times and don’t love, other then that this was a super quick task. My laundry room has storage, so all my backups are stored in the closet in the laundry room which is super handy and easy to keep on top of my product backups.

I really have been loving these 20 minutes or less purging tasks. I look forward to them each day. How are you enjoying them? I love checking off the days from the printable calendar, so motivating. Sometimes purging and decluttering can feel so overwhelming, by making the tasks smaller it is more likely to get done. This is also a process that can continue throughout the year. Every time you feel like it’s time, but don’t want to feel overwhelmed and can re-do these steps. This can also be applied to other areas in your home you feel like you want to get to. The key too is set a timer, you do what you can with the time allowed and I am telling you even the little progress will feel so good you will continue to work on it on the following days.

28 Days Purging Series: Day 15

Welcome to day fifthteen of this purging series. Today we are going to be doing our Cell Phone.

Today is the day we go through our phones and declutter it. Now in days, cell phones are a very important electronic that we can do many things with. Over time it can have many extra things saved on it that we no longer need. I know that mine could use a good go through. I have a few apps that I noticed I don’t use but are still on my phone, also in my industry a lot of photos that are already on my hard drive. If you have a hard drive or extra computer space you can save a lot of the photos too, giving you more room and freeing up space on your phone which will improve your phones speed. It is a good thing to have your phone items backup anyways. If you have extra time at the end of this task you may want to also backup your phone. Apps, photos, notes, files, etc…. You don’t need to delete everything off just what you are no longer using or needing. You can also use this time to create folders that you can gather similar apps into. This is a great tool to keep them organized and leaving your screens clutter free. This task can take a lot of the time, set a timer and go.

How long did this task take you? Does your phone feel less cluttered?

28 Days Purging Series: Day 9

Welcome to day nine of this purging series. Today we are going to be doing Cleaning Products. Have you downloaded your free printable for this purging series? Click here if you would like your copy, you will be directed to the Introduction To My 28 Days Purge Series post where you can find it.

I really needed this one, I love testing new cleaning products out, with this being said that means my collection can be a lot at times. For this task I did it in 2 steps as I have cleaning products on my main floor and my upper floor so I don’t have to go up and down when I need them. I pulled all cleaning products from my main floor first from anywhere there were stored ( I store mine in the kitchen under the sink and my backups in the laundry room, I also store the ones that I am not sure of or wanting to try in the laundry room) I knew that this was the time to let go by tossing it or by giving it to someone who wanted it. I went thru everything and made sure I only kept what I loved and used. Everything else went. Products I bought and didn’t work or didn’t work as well as I wanted was gone. I did this same step for the products I had upstairs in the cleaning closet.

This task didn’t take me more the 10 minutes. It was an easy one because I already knew I would only be keeping what works and what I love.
